The Blackstone Theatre originally presented motion pictures and vaudeville. Faced by increasing competition from new theatres that presented sound films, the management turned to burlesque shows. City elders would not tolerate such a move and shuttered the theatre in October 1929. The Paramount Publix theatre chain purchased the venue and reopened it as the State Theatre on 25 December 1929.

The theatre discontinued operations on 3 November 1977.
